MBSR Class Description:

Feeling stressed out by life’s demands? Experiencing difficulty focusing your wandering or worrying mind? Finding it challenging to control your emotions with your loved ones or coworkers?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) offers you an empowering set of strategies to more effectively navigate the challenges in your life. MBSR teaches a form of meditation called mindfulness, which is the ability to skillfully direct your attention to the present moment with curiosity and self-compassion.  It helps you get out of auto-pilot and get into the here and now with present awareness.  It allows you to cultivate a new relationship with stress and to connect more deeply and whole-heartedly to your life.  Mindfulness is an innate ability that is already present within you. The MBSR course will help awaken these powerful resources within you that can lead to greater clarity, wisdom, and equanimity.

MBSR was founded in the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School over 30 years ago.  Over two decades of research supports its effectiveness which includes links to:

  • Increases in one’s ability to cope more effectively to short-term and long-term stress
  • Improvements in one’s ability to relax
  • Enhanced self-esteem
  • Greater levels of energy and zest for life
  • Reductions in perception of pain
  • Increases in one’s ability to cope with chronic pain

The MBSR class will meet for 2 ½ hours per week for 8 weeks and includes a day long mini-meditation retreat.  The MBSR class consists of:

  • Guided meditation practices
  • Gentle mindful movement practices
  • Group dialogue
  • Home practices to generalize skills
